PVR INOX & Wonderla Amusement Park are Leveling Up With AR/VR Magic

India’s leading entertainment destinations are entering a new era—not just with blockbuster films and roller coasters, but by weaving AR, VR, and next-gen experiences into their business models to capture the loyalty of a digital-first audience. Leading the charge are PVR INOX and Wonderla, both of whom are reimagining what out-of-home entertainment means for today’s experience-hungry, tech-savvy generation.

PVR INOX’s Cinemagic: Beyond Movies to Virtual Reality

PVR INOX, India’s largest multiplex operator, is piloting a cinema model designed as a “multi-hour, multi-purpose” hub with its new Cinemagic property in Delhi’s Pitampura. This isn’t your regular multiplex. Cinemagic invites audiences to step into an all-day entertainment zone, blending film with gaming arcades, VR/AR experiences, and immersive themed environments. The goal is clear—keep customers coming for more than just a movie, and make every visit an event.

Key features include:

  • A recreational arcade with VR/AR gaming stations, catering to gamers and families seeking interactive fun.
  • Themed auditoriums and lounges for socializing and events, even separate from film shows.
  • Curated F&B options and even retail like perfumeries and nail bars—making it a lifestyle destination.

This model responds to evolving audience habits, especially post-pandemic, where OTT platforms have raised the bar for in-home content. Now, cinemas must compete with binge-worthy streaming—and the answer is to create experiences screens at home can’t replicate. PVR INOX is also using data from OTT trends to curate more diverse programming, including AR/VR-powered events and themed evenings.

Wonderla: Immersing Guests in Cinematic Worlds

India’s theme park leader Wonderla is deploying movie-based and IP-driven attractions to keep their parks fresh for new generations. The next wave: film-linked rides and VR/AR experiences. Wonderla’s management recently stated plans to introduce “movie-based attractions based on new intellectual properties”—not just for new parks, but as updates to existing locations.

Their expansion aligns with global trends where blockbuster IPs (think Marvel or Star Wars in the West) power immersive rides, story-driven VR simulations, and interactive AR trails. Wonderla envisions bringing immersive entertainment with more sensory engagement—potentially including VR dark rides, AR quests linked to movie plots, and interactive shows powered by projection mapping and real-time effects.

The Industry Shift: Gen Z and the Quest for ‘Experiences’

Both cinema and amusement park operators have realized that the future belongs to those who offer more than just passive viewing or rides. Gen Z and millennial audiences increasingly seek spaces for gaming, social connection, creator-driven events, and “wow factor” tech like augmented reality photo ops or VR escape rooms.

Across India, the lines are blurring:

  • Shopping centres and cineplexes are collaborating to offer XR-based pop-ups, virtual concerts, and esports zones.
  • Arcades are making a comeback, but now with VR headsets and haptic simulators—sometimes even tied to Bollywood releases or gaming IPs.
  • Some cinemas screen VR shorts or AR-activated trailers, bringing digital interactivity into the auditorium itself.

AR and VR are not just “add-on features” but core business drivers for India’s out-of-home entertainment giants. For operators like PVR INOX and Wonderla, merging technology, storytelling, and physical space is helping build audiences—and community—far beyond the ticket window. As consumer habits continue to evolve, expect to see even more collaborative, creative, and tech-driven spaces emerge, making Indian entertainment venues as future-forward as any in the world
