Your Brain Doesn’t Know the Difference: Peking University Proves VR Wings Feel Real

In the 1990s, Chinese aerospace pioneer Qian Xuesen coined a term for virtual reality that Western technologists never quite matched: Lingjing — roughly translated as ‘spiritual realm’ or ‘mind environment.’ He didn’t just name the technology; he predicted it would fundamentally blur the boundary between human and machine. Decades later, researchers at Peking University have handed him a posthumous vindication.

Wings the Brain Believes In

The experiment was elegantly simple and profoundly unsettling. Volunteers were placed in a VR environment and trained over one week to control a pair of virtual wings using movements of their arms and wrists. Nothing exotic — just repetition, feedback, and motion. But what happened inside their skulls told a different story.

Brain scans using functional MRI (fMRI) revealed that after just seven days of training, the neural representations of those virtual wings had migrated. They no longer registered as external objects or tools. The brain had begun encoding them in regions associated with the volunteers’ own limbs — as if the wings were simply part of the body.

Neuroplasticity Meets the Metaverse

This is neuroplasticity operating at a scale that should reframe how we think about immersive technology. The brain is not a fixed observer of virtual experience — it is an active participant that rewrites itself in response to sustained interaction. Give it a convincing enough illusion, long enough, and it stops calling it an illusion.

The implications stretch well beyond flight simulators. Researchers working on prosthetics have long chased this phenomenon — the moment a patient’s brain accepts an artificial limb as genuinely theirs. VR may offer a faster, more accessible path to achieving that integration, without surgery or hardware implanted in the body.

Qian’s Vision, Finally Legible

Qian Xuesen was best known for his role in China’s ballistic missile and space programs, but his thinking on human-machine integration was always the longer game. Where Western VR discourse in the 1990s fixated on graphics fidelity and commercial applications, Qian framed Lingjing as a civilizational tool — one that would eventually reshape cognition itself.

The Peking University findings don’t just validate that intuition. They give it a mechanism. The brain’s body map is writable. VR holds the pen.
