Vadodara doctors at the state-run SSG Hospital successfully performed a breast cancer surgery using augmented reality (AR) integrated with Meta VR headsets. This pioneering step marks a technological leap in surgical precision and patient care within the city.
The patient, a 47-year-old woman, had previously completed chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Following these treatments, her tumour became non-palpable—a common challenge during breast-conserving surgeries. To overcome this, the surgical team digitally merged CT and MRI scans to create a detailed 3D model of her breast.
Using Meta VR headsets, the doctors visualized this model in AR, projecting it directly onto the patient’s body in the operating room. This enabled them to pinpoint a tiny metal clip that had been placed earlier in the tumour and plan the incision with remarkable accuracy.
With AR-guided precision, the team removed the tumour through a minimal 2 cm incision, achieving complete removal while preserving the natural appearance of the breast. The patient’s relative also experienced the 3D model through the Meta headset, helping her understand the surgery better and easing concerns before the procedure.
“This technology is still developing, but it offers immense potential to improve surgical planning and speed up recovery,” said Dr. Shivang Shukla, consultant surgical oncologist, who performed the operation alongside Dr. Nisarg Shah. The advanced imaging and headset support were provided by Jajal Medical.
The patient recovered swiftly and was discharged within five days. SSG Hospital officials emphasized their commitment to keeping advanced treatments both accessible and affordable. “We aim to ensure cutting-edge care remains within everyone’s reach,” remarked Dr. Ranjan Iyer, hospital superintendent.
October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Shukla urged women above 40 to undergo yearly mammograms for early detection. “Women with a strong family history should consult their oncologist for personalized screening,” he advised.
This case not only underscores the promise of AR and VR in surgical innovation but also highlights how technology can bridge precision, understanding, and compassion in modern healthcare.
