AI Agents Can Now Reverse-Engineer Binaries at Machine Speed — and That Changes Everything

For decades, reverse engineering has been one of computing’s most demanding disciplines — a painstaking craft requiring deep expertise in assembly language, memory architecture, and the specific quirks of disassemblers like IDA Pro or Ghidra. That barrier is now eroding fast. A project called Reverse Engineer Anything (REA) is combining AI coding agents with industry-standard reverse-engineering tools, and the implications reach well beyond the security research community.

What REA Actually Does

REA is an open-source project that has accumulated over 200,000 GitHub stars — a figure that signals serious developer interest, not casual curiosity. At its core, the project uses MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers to expose disassemblers and binary analysis tools directly to AI agents. That means tools like Ghidra, Hopper, and IDA Pro — software typically operated by specialists — can now be queried, directed, and iterated upon by an agent working through natural language instructions.

Rather than replacing these tools, REA gives AI agents the ability to call into them programmatically: querying specific functions, tracing call graphs, and testing hypotheses against compiled binaries. The agent doesn’t need the original source code. It works from what’s actually shipped — the binary itself.

InfoQ recently covered REA’s growing traction, highlighting demonstrations that illustrate just how capable this approach has become.

From Notion’s Clipboard to DOS-Era Game Math

The project’s showcase examples are telling. Developers have used REA to trace how Notion’s Electron app handles clipboard data — something that would typically require significant manual effort to unpack across layers of bundled JavaScript and native code. In another case, REA reconstructed the sound-panning functions from DX-Ball, a classic breakout-style game, complete with test coverage — effectively recovering the logic of a shipped feature without ever touching the original codebase.

Perhaps most striking is the recovery of calculation routines from DOS-era games — software that is decades old, poorly documented, and compiled for architectures few modern developers work with daily. That REA can assist in reconstructing this kind of logic speaks to the generality of the approach, not just its power in modern contexts.

The Security and IP Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

Capability demonstrations like these are impressive in isolation. In aggregate, they raise serious questions.

Practitioners familiar with the tooling have flagged several concerns worth taking seriously:

  • Intellectual property theft becomes easier. Proprietary algorithms, data structures, and business logic embedded in compiled software are suddenly far more accessible to extraction. Independent developers and small software companies — who lack the legal resources of large enterprises — are particularly exposed.
  • Paid feature bypassing gets simpler. License checks, feature gates, and subscription enforcement mechanisms are common targets for reverse engineers. AI-assisted analysis lowers the skill floor for circumventing these protections considerably.
  • Cloud migration pressure increases. One downstream effect may be that software vendors accelerate the shift to server-side execution precisely because it removes the binary from the attacker’s reach. REA can’t reverse-engineer code it can’t access.

To be fair, some practitioners report that REA delivers meaningfully better results than purely manual approaches — particularly for tedious, repetitive analysis tasks where human attention degrades over time but an agent’s doesn’t. There are legitimate and valuable use cases: malware analysis, vulnerability research, legacy system migration, and interoperability work all stand to benefit.

A Tool That Reflects Its Moment

REA is, in many ways, a product of where AI development is right now — a period where agents are being connected to existing professional tooling rather than replacing it wholesale. The result is a kind of force multiplication: the tools haven’t changed, but the speed and accessibility of using them has shifted dramatically.

That shift is neither inherently good nor bad. But for the software industry — particularly independent developers who’ve long relied on compiled binaries as a practical form of obfuscation — it represents a real and immediate change in the threat landscape. The source code you never shipped is no longer as protected as you might have assumed.
