India’s Classroom Revolutionaries: Award-Winning Teachers Bring VR Labs and AI to Rural Schools

When most people picture cutting-edge educational technology, they imagine well-funded private schools in major cities, gleaming campuses with fiber-optic internet and device-to-student ratios that would make Silicon Valley nod approvingly. What they don’t picture is a tribal government primary school in Gujarat housing a 7D virtual reality lab. But that’s exactly what’s happening — and it’s only one chapter in a much larger story unfolding across rural India right now.

This week, President Droupadi Murmu honored 82 educators with the National Teacher Award 2026, recognizing a generation of innovators who are refusing to accept that geography or government funding should determine the quality of a child’s education. The honorees aren’t just good teachers. They’re engineers of access — people who have built platforms, labs, and apps that are reaching millions of students and educators in places that conventional EdTech companies rarely bother to serve.

A 7D Lab in a Tribal School

Perhaps no single story captures the ambition of this movement better than that of Nitinkumar Mahendrakumar Pathak, a teacher who transformed a government primary school in Gujarat’s tribal belt into something resembling a technology incubator. Pathak didn’t just introduce a tablet program or set up a projector. He built a 7D VR and AR lab, a 45-computer IT facility, and a functioning journalism studio — all within the walls of a school that most educational policymakers would classify as “under-resourced.”

The implications of that kind of infrastructure in that kind of setting are profound. For students in tribal communities who have historically been pushed to the margins of India’s educational narrative, immersive virtual reality isn’t a luxury — it becomes a leveler. A child who has never left their village can stand inside a human cell, walk through ancient Rome, or observe a chemical reaction from the molecular level. Pathak’s school doesn’t just teach these children; it signals to them that their education is worth investing in at the highest level.

Scaling Beyond the Classroom

What distinguishes this cohort of award winners from talented individual teachers is their instinct to scale. Rajesh Kouluri’s Hello Dhruthi AI application has moved well past the boundaries of any single classroom or district. The platform has now reached over 15,700 students across 2,574 schools — a distribution footprint that would be impressive for a funded startup, let alone a teacher-built initiative. Kouluri didn’t stop there. His RAJCLASSROOM platform has reportedly connected with 2.5 million teachers, turning a personal innovation into professional development infrastructure at national scale.

This is the critical distinction that reporting from India Today’s education desk highlights about this year’s honorees: these are not isolated experiments. These teachers are thinking in systems. They understand that building one great lab or one great lesson helps dozens of students, but building a replicable tool or platform can help millions — and they’re doing exactly that.

Closing the Digital Divide from the Inside

The digital divide in education is typically framed as a problem that requires top-down solutions — government broadband rollouts, national device distribution programs, international NGO funding. What India’s 2026 National Teacher Award winners demonstrate is that the divide is also being closed from the inside, by educators who are too impatient to wait for systemic change and too creative to be stopped by budget constraints.

For the XR industry specifically, stories like Pathak’s VR lab in Gujarat should be a wake-up call. The market for immersive learning technology in emerging economies isn’t just urban private schools. It’s tribal government schools where a motivated teacher has already done the community groundwork, established trust, and created demand. The infrastructure question is already being answered by people like him.

What This Means for EdTech

As immersive technology costs continue to fall and AI tools become more accessible, the conditions that allowed these 82 educators to innovate will only improve. The harder ingredient — the will to do it, the creativity to make it work without ideal resources, and the vision to scale it — is already present in India’s government school system in ways that should reframe how the global EdTech sector thinks about its next frontier.

These aren’t stories about what technology can do for education someday. They’re proof of what determined educators are already making it do, right now, in places most of the industry isn’t looking.
