A.R. Rahman’s ARR Immersive Brings Kathak and Clair de Lune Into the Apple Vision Pro Era

A.R. Rahman has never been content to exist inside a single musical tradition. The Oscar-winning composer built his career on collisions — Carnatic and electronic, Sufi and orchestral, Tamil cinema and Hollywood. So it makes a certain kind of sense that his first major spatial computing project doesn’t just showcase Indian classical dance. It pairs it with Debussy.

ARR Immersive, Rahman’s new app for Apple Vision Pro, launches July 22 on the Apple App Store, and it arrives as one of the more genuinely ambitious cultural offerings yet produced for Apple’s mixed-reality headset. The premise is deceptively simple: Kathak, one of India’s most technically demanding classical dance forms, performed against a soundtrack of Western classical compositions. But the execution runs considerably deeper than a novelty pairing.

Spatial Audio as the Real Star

The app features three distinct Kathak performances, each scored to a Western classical cornerstone — Debussy’s Clair de Lune, works by Rachmaninoff, and Beethoven. What elevates the experience beyond a 360-degree video showcase is the audio infrastructure underneath it. ARR Immersive uses Apple’s Spatial Audio Format (ASAF) to render sound in three dimensions, meaning the orchestral presence shifts and breathes around the viewer as a dancer moves through the frame.

This is a meaningful technical choice. ASAF is still a relatively underutilized format, and deploying it for live performance recordings — rather than gaming or cinematic effects — positions ARR Immersive as a proof-of-concept for what concert and dance documentation could look like on spatial hardware. Rahman’s team appears to understand that immersive audio isn’t a feature you bolt on. It’s the architecture the entire experience is built around.

From Cannes XR to the App Store

The app also includes re-edited footage from Rahman’s Le Musk, a VR film that previously screened at the Cannes XR Festival. Bringing that material into a consumer-facing app is a smart move — Cannes XR audiences are, by definition, a small and curated group, while the Apple App Store represents an entirely different scale of accessibility. The transition from festival circuit to platform distribution is exactly the kind of pipeline the immersive arts world has been trying to build for years, and Rahman’s name recognition gives it genuine reach.

A dedicated ARR Live section within the app hosts concert recordings, extending the platform beyond dance into the wider territory of Rahman’s performance legacy. The implication is clear: this isn’t a one-time art project. It’s a platform in early form.

Cross-Cultural Collision as Design Philosophy

What makes ARR Immersive interesting from an editorial standpoint isn’t just the technology — it’s the curatorial instinct. Pairing Kathak with Rachmaninoff isn’t an obvious choice, and it isn’t a safe one. Both traditions carry enormous interpretive weight and devoted audiences who could reasonably ask why one is being filtered through the other. That tension, if the experience handles it honestly, is precisely what makes it worth watching.

Rahman has always worked best when he’s uncomfortable with easy answers, and according to reporting from T2 Online, the app reflects a genuine interest in what happens when these forms share the same spatial frame — not as fusion, but as conversation.

What Comes Next

A Meta Quest version is confirmed for future release, which will ultimately determine whether ARR Immersive remains a premium Vision Pro curiosity or becomes something with broader cultural impact. Quest’s installed base dwarfs Apple’s headset figures, and bringing the same ASAF-quality experience to that platform will require technical adaptation — but also opens the door to a genuinely global audience.

For now, ARR Immersive stands as one of the more considered entries in an Apple Vision Pro app ecosystem still searching for its identity. Rahman isn’t just filling a content gap. He’s making an argument about what spatial computing is actually for.
